Episode 9: Ambassador Capricia Marshall

I’m happy to share the latest Volta Insider podcast with you. This really was one of my favorite conversations so far! I had the honor of sitting down with Ambassador Capricia Marshall, the former U.S. Chief of Protocol.

I have been lucky enough to know Amb. Marshall as a family friend, but through this interview even I learned a lot about her career and her many adventures in Washington, D.C. that I hadn’t heard before. Like trying to get into the White House with First Lady Hillary Clinton’s Inaugural gown, and even with the best of intentions, don’t dare go near Queen Elizabeth II’s handbag!

Amb. Marshall headed to Arkansas fresh out of law school to join the first presidential campaign of Bill Clinton. It was after meeting Hillary Clinton that Capricia knew she could learn a lot from the then-First Lady of Arkansas. Capricia never looked back.

After serving as Special Assistant to First Lady Hillary Clinton (a role Capricia created, and has been in existence with each subsequent First Lady), Capricia was asked to be the White House Social Secretary.

However, her ultimate dream was to one day be the Chief of Protocol. Therefore, when President Obama asked Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for recommendations to take over the post, Sec. Clinton asked Capricia if she would like her name put forward. Of course she said yes!
